Seborrheic Dermatitis also known as (Seborrheic Eczema, Seborrhea) is a condition of the skin and scalp caus­­­ing itchy flaky scaly and red skin. Particularly occurs on Sebum –gland rich areas. Seborrheic Dermatitis is commonly called as bad dandruff, a very common condition to almost all ages.

 But it is more common on young adults, Favorable to generate on males than in females.  Seborrhea is the result of too much production of skin oil and irritation from yeast called Malassezia. This is also known to run in families. Irregular cleaning of the skin and hair, too much weather exposure, stress, and fatigue can also increase the risk of it. Patients with spinal injuries, depression, Parkinson diseases and other conditions are also very open to it. Another kind of Seborrhea is Cradle cap. The one that is common on babies. Cradle cap is not contagious, and has fewer tendencies to itch, yet if it does and skin break may occur it will result to irritations and infection.

Based on early studies genes has also a role with its presence, though until now many speculations are not yet proven. Thus one of the scientific explanations about its occurrence has to do more with Malassezia yeast on the skin. Malassezia are actually a natural skin commensals .How is malassezia became a part of it? On an observation made, a patient with Sebborheic dermatitis has high levels of Malassezia yeast on the skin than on uninfected individuals. Thus a conclusion was made and accepted regarding with its role on the spread of Seborrheic dermatitis.

How is Scalp Seborrheic dermatitis distinguished? People with seborrheic dermatitis on scalp often have this flaky white particles, itchy, sores, and unwanted smell on the scalp. Though this type of dermatitis is not dangerous the very fact that its appearance won\'t make you look good would lower down your confidence. The feeling of itchiness can even be more disturbing than as expected during dry winter, a lot of conclusion have been made on how to avoid and decreased the chances of having seborrheic dermatitis. Treatments have been made for this kind of dermatitis. Usually the target of medication is to lessen or remove the yeast that is associated with this. Since Malassezia yeast plays a big role on its spread. Some of the remedies to avoid and cure it are the used of:
  • Anti dandruff shampoo, this shampoo often has pyrithione zinc and is suitable for mild seborrheic dermatitis.
  • Anti fungal shampoo,usually contains ketoconazole or selenium sulphide. These are for severe seborrhea. And most of it is prescribed by your doctors.
  • Corticosteroid gel will also help when applied on the scalp or on the skin but can only be used under medical supervision.
  • Zinc Pca based shampoo has a big role on curing seborrhea, its elements helps to prevent and diminished the presence of seborrheic dermatitis.
  • Though the above mentioned remedy for seborrheic dermatitis may always depends on the level of infection a patient has. For some cases antibiotic and deeper medication applies to those who have severe and complicated seborrheic dermatitis conditions.
