Vitiligo skin disorder is caused by depigmentation of the skin. Pigment determines color; therefore depigmentation of the skin is when the skin has a lack of color. It is caused when melanocytes are destroyed. Melanocytes are the part of the skin that produces pigments. Let\'s discuss what vitiligo looks like, how it\'s diagnosed, and the treatment options.

Vitiligo skin disorder looks like white patches on the body. These appear normally in areas of the body that are prone to sun exposure, such as the face, arms, hands, legs, and chest. While this skin disorder affects all races equally, it is more noticeable on individuals with darker skin colors. We have read about Michael Jackson\'s unhappiness with his vitiligo skin problem. Vitiligo can appear on any area of the body and can be wide spread or just a few patches. These patches can also form in mucous membranes; these are the areas that line the inside of the nose and mouth.

Vitiligo is diagnosed through a physical exam in a doctor\'s office. Since vitiligo is more common in individuals with autoimmune diseases, the doctor will perform a complete physical, including blood work. Those inflicted with this skin disorder may also have hyperthyroidism, adrenocortical insufficiency, alopecia areata, and pernicious anemia. The cause of vitiligo is unknown and doctors are unsure of the link between autoimmune disorders and the skin disease.

Dermatitis is sometimes known as eczema. Dermatitis is an umbrella term for skin disorders that cause a red and itchy rash. Other symptoms include pimples, blisters, scaling or crusting, oozing and open sores. Excessive scratching can also cause a thickening or hardening of the skin over time. Sufferers of chronic dermatitis may experience cracks or blisters, which may invite a bacterial infection.

Drug Rashes
Some people may experience an allergic reaction to a drug, which can reveal itself as a skin reaction. Drug rashes can occur even if the drug is swallowed; it need not be rubbed on the skin. Symptoms of a drug rash include hives, tiny bumps, peeling and redness. The rash may be experienced in conjunction with watery eyes or a runny nose. Although most hives resulting from an allergic reaction are itchy, hives from a drug rash rarely itch. If you experience a drug reaction, stop taking the medication and call your doctor.

Psoriasis is a chronic disease that occurs because of skin cells regenerating at an abnormally high rate. Immune system complications may contribute to psoriasis. Psoriasis appears as raised, red patches. The border between the patches and the normal skin is clearly demarcated. The patches also appear to have silvery scales. Some psoriasis patients may only have one or two patches, whereas others may have patches that cover a significant portion of their skin. Psoriasis patients may also experience thickened or otherwise deformed nails. Symptoms may diminish and then flare again. Often, exposure to bright sunlight may diminish symptoms. Topical and oral drugs are available for psoriasis patients, and phototherapy can also help.

Erythema Multiforme
Erythema multiforme is a recurring skin disorder. It may arise as a result of a complication with a herpes virus infection. The symptoms appear as red, raised, often symmetrical patches on skin. The patches typically appear as target lesions, with purple-gray centers. Sufferers of this disorder may also experience painful blisters on the lips and in the mouth.

Granuloma Annulare
This skin disorder is chronic but harmless. The cause is not yet known. Granuloma annulare appears as a ring of raised bumps that have an either normal or sunken area of skin in the center of the ring. The bumps are small and firm. They frequently form on the hands, feet, legs and fingers. Fortunately, the bumps do not often cause any pain or itching. Adults and children are susceptible.
