Additionally, Ayurveda and traditional Chinese Herbal medicine text have explained the systematic use of these medicines.

The scientists found that people in various parts of the world use similar plants for same purposes. And, in the 19th century, with advent of chemical analysis, scientists performed the extraction of active ingredients of the plant. They modified the extractions with some other chemicals to give the improved results. In later history, the chemists also began to make their own modifications and herbal medicines; which tended the shift of herbal medicines towards the pharmaceuticals only.

A single herb contains many ingredients of benefit to the body. A number of factors are involved in improving the quality of the herb and its components. The environment in which the plant is grown has the major effect on the quality of the herb. The soil, climate, bugs, altitude etc are the primary factors that need to be taken care for the healthy growth of the plant. In many of the herbs, the whole plant is not useful. Only one part of the plant is used to correct the problem. Therefore, many herbalists extract the active agents of that plant such as roots, leaves, flower, seeds etc. Every part of the herb has number of components which can not be generated synthetically or pharmaceutically, that\'s the only reason the herbalist use the extracts of the medicinal plant.
