Sebaceous Cyst Causes: Discover the Causes of a Sebaceous Cyst

Author: Ivan Miller
Sebaceous cyst is a skin condition described as the formation of a small and smooth bump or lump in the skin. This round bump can be easily moved using your fingers as it is a sac that contains a cheesy semi-fluid. Sebaceous cyst usually appears in yellow or white color and people with darker skin have a pigmented lump. The size ranges from less than ¼-inch to 2-inch in diameter. It can occur in any areas of the body, but mostly on face, neck, chest and trunk as these parts have larger oil glands. It is also likely to appear in delicate areas of the body like the private organs. There are times when the sebaceous cyst appears to have a central opening where tiny blackhead may be found. The semi-liquid may be squeezed out of it, but this is not highly advised to be done. Those white-heads that are deep-seated on the skin are considered miniature cysts.

One of the most common causes of a sebaceous cyst is the damage caused to hair follicles. Each of the hair in the body grows in the small pocket in the skin layer below the epidermis known as follicles. When a person is exposed to surgical wounds or abrasions, the follicles are blocked by the surface cells causing a sebaceous cyst. Another incident that causes this problem is the damage made to the sebaceous glands. Just below the follicles is the gland producing sebum which lubricates the skin and also coats the air shaft. When you experience inflammation of the skin like having acne, it damages the gland and becomes a site prone to the formation of this condition.

Also common of the sebaceous cyst causes is the developmental defects. It is believed that this problem can also happen in the fetus starting to develop when the cells which are intended for the formation of hair or skin are trapped on those cells intended for the formation of other tissues. Thus, heredity is another of the sebaceous cyst causes. People who are suffering from genetic disorders such as Gardner\'s syndrome or Basal-Cell Nervous syndrome are also likely to develop this condition.

While some of the sebaceous cyst causes can be avoided, if you already developed this problem, there are several solutions. If you have noticed a small lump on the skin that feels like a pimple, you can place a warm wet cloth in it several times (not as warm that it burns your skin). The wetness and the warmth may help in softening the layer that blocks and allow the cyst to open. Squeezing it may just get it infected. If the sebaceous cyst is already infected and inflamed, doctors may recommend the draining of the cyst using dry heat. Typically, they will recommend having a surgical intervention wherein the whole capsule is removed. But this does not mean the cyst will not come back. A more interesting solution is Homeopathy, which is a natural, non-invasive treatment that permanently cures a sebaceous cyst.
