Foot blisters can be both unsightly and painful and are unfortunately common in today`s active society. All of us at some point in our life have had a foot blister. They are caused by a number of factors, friction, heat and swelling and the following tips will assist in preventing them occurring.
· Buy well fitting shoes - this is true for preventing a range of foot problems. Ideally, they should not rub anywhere, even from the beginning. If necessary, add insoles or heel cushions for added protection and comfort.

Choose shoes that `breath` well and inspect the inside of shoes for any seams or worn areas as these may result in extra friction and subsequently foot blisters
· If you know that you are `blister prone` or likely to be undertaking lots of physical activity, then make sure that you always wear good socks and apply adhesive felt or moleskin to areas on your feet that frequently blister.
· Sprinkle powder into shoes and/or socks daily to reduce the possibility of friction. Feet that are well protected are far less likely to blister.
· Do not use socks that show evidence of being over worn or torn. Thin areas and holes within the socks may result in the formation of hot spots and blisters.
· Consider using two pairs of socks if undertaking substantial physical activity. Alternatively, invest in a sock with double layers to aid in blister prevention.
· Many people swear by petroleum jelly as a blister preventative. Many distance walkers e.g. marathon walkers and sports enthusiasts use lubricants on their feet.
