There are conditions that can cause hair loss. Most of them are genetically motivated and may not be completely avoided. These include alopecia areata.

What is it? It is an autoimmune disease that leads to hair loss. The scalp is the most affected though other body parts such as the face and body.
What causes it? It is caused by a failure in the autoimmune system, what may be called computer error. The while blood cells do protect the body from the invading germs, they can however turn around and affect the body\'s own cells. The hair follicle cells are affected and gradually die leading to thinning of hair. It is not quite known how this happens but it is suspected that genetic malfunction or viral attack may lead to this kind of condition.
Can you develop the disease? Whether or not you develop the hair loss due to the white blood cells depends on the chances that run the gene runs in your family. Therefore if you have a relative with the disease, you are likely to be get the disease.
Can it be salvaged? The chance that your hair will re-grow are often unpredictable. It largely depends on the person. There are those in whom the patches will only be limited to very small patches that regrow soon after, others, it may be large patches that do not regrow. The good news is that for most hair follicles affected by the alopecia areata, the new cells produced are often not affected.
What can one do to treat the disease? The hair loss due to the white blood cells destruction of the hair follicles can be reversed or managed through stimulating the hair growth. This can be done through use of corticosteroids which are injected into the localized patches. Local topical sensitizers such as diphenylcyclopropenone are also effective. Alternatively, acupuncture, aromatherapy, photochemotherapy, surgery among others can be used to reverse the hair loss.
What are the effects of the disease? The disease only affects the hair growth. There are no known effects of the diseases other than the hair loss. Not even pain would be felt at the localized place. With this additional information, I am sure that you are better armed to manage the hair loss.
